This elevated deck in Barnstable, Massachusetts had served the homeowners well for over 25 years. Built with mahogany decking, it remained in use but was beginning to show signs of deterioration. With long-term plans in mind, the homeowners partnered with MassTech Roofing & Building to rebuild the structure, bring it up to modern code, and expand its footprint to accommodate future upgrades.

The new deck increased the depth from 10 feet to 14 feet, creating a more flexible footprint that can be fully enclosed in the future as a three-season porch. To support this long-term vision, MassTech installed six new concrete footings, including one post that reaches over 10 feet from the ground—requiring 6×6 structural posts per Massachusetts building code. In addition, the team used substantial 5-foot precast footings to ensure proper support for the upgraded structure and future enclosure. The previous deck was 41′ x 10′ and the completed deck 41′ x 14′.

The entire frame was rebuilt using pressure-treated lumber designed to meet or exceed structural requirements. The surface was finished with composite decking using a hidden fastener system, paired with composite railings and black balusters for a clean, low-maintenance aesthetic. An insect screen was installed between the decking and framing to help reduce bug activity below the deck—particularly important for enclosed or partially enclosed spaces.

The result is a deck that not only looks sharp and performs well today, but is also designed with the future in mind—a stable, code-compliant platform ready to support further enhancements down the line.
